How to get here

As Tasmania is Australia's Island State (unless you are a rather good swimmer!), there are only two ways to enter the State – either by plane or ferry.

More than a quarter of all visitors to Tasmania enter the state through Launceston Airport, the welcoming and picturesque gateway to northern Tasmania, recently nominated as “Major Airport of the Year” by the Australian Airports Association.

The airport is located just 15km from the city of Launceston and serves more than 1.3 million passengers annually, with recent upgrades now showcasing the very best of Tasmania’s produce and products.

Jetstar, Virgin Australia and Qantaslink all operate frequent affordable direct services between Launceston and Melbourne, Brisbane and Sydney. Check out their respective websites for schedules and the latest deals. Not that you needed another excuse to visit our patch, but for extra sharp pricing see Jetstar's latest offers by clicking here.

To access the rugged and wild landscapes of pristine Flinders Island Sharp Airlines offers a Melbourne to Flinders Island (Essendon) service.

For some, it can be a toss-up between flying and hiring a car when you arrive, or catching the boat and bringing your own vehicle. Prices do fluctuate throughout the year according to season and availability, so make sure you do a little research prior to booking.

The trip over Bass Strait on the Spirit of Tasmania ferry takes about 10 hours or so. May to November the twin ships do one sailing each a day, leaving Devonport and Melbourne in the evening and arriving at their respective destinations early morning, passing each other on the high seas in the dark of night. December to April the ships sail twice daily in order to meet the increase in bookings that the warmer months bring.
