How to get around

Northern Tasmania's compact layout and laid-back pace make for a region that is both efficient to get around and easy to navigate.

Many of the major car-rental firms have a presence at the airport – you can start your visit in Launceston and begin exploration here. Launceston is the perfect base for your self-drive Tasmanian experience – we really are at the heart of Tasmania – and after taking time to explore our main hub and boutique city you will be able to the other corners of our island.

If you prefer not to drive, taxis, Uber, and an airport shuttle greet planes as they land – it's a short 15 minute trip to the centre of Launceston. The drivers here are friendly and warm – always willing to offer helpful suggestions and recommendations – your Launceston travel experience may well be unlike anywhere else in the world!

Metro operate our main public transport system, a bus network that services the city – a Day Rover pass will gain you unlimited travel after 9am. Please be aware many routes do not operate later in the evening or on Sundays. City of Launceston operates the free Tiger Bus service – transporting commuters and travellers alike from Inveresk Railyards into the City and back, looping around every 30 minutes. Keep an eye out for the buses with the distinctive black stripes of the illusive Tasmanian Tiger, a mammalian dog-like creature sadly considered extinct – and who now adorns the City's crest.

A number of regional bus services operate out of Launceston – check out the websites of Redline Coaches, TassieLink, Callows Coaches and Manion's Coaches for their latest schedules.

While Launceston may be a little hilly, as it nestles in the Tamar Valley, the relaxed environment and dedicated infrastructure make it very suitable for getting around by bicycle – as evidenced by the rapid growth of cycling as a recreational activity. Bikes are available for hire from Mountain Designs, Arthouse Backpacker Hostel, Rent A Cycle Tasmania, AvantiPlus Launceston and Mountain Bike Tasmania.

To access the rugged and wild landscapes of pristine Flinders Island Sharp Airlines offer the only Launceston to Flinders Island and Melbourne to Flinders Island (Essendon) services.
