Finding simple with the sows

Q&A with Fork It Farm

Daniel and Kim raise pigs in a lush pocket of Greater Launceston. You can taste the care the couple originally from Queensland take at each step of the farming process: their products are packed with flavours that easily steal the show at snack time. We asked the pair a few questions...

1. You moved to Greater Launnie from QLD: when, why and have you ever looked back?
In 2017 we said ‘fork it’ to the stresses of city life, we packed up our life and moved to Lebrina, a peaceful township in Tasmania's East Tamar Valley. We wanted to live a simpler life without ‘the stuff’, but we also wanted to make what we do significant. It’s the simple things that make this our home and we are never leaving.

2. Fork It Farm is the epitome of paddock to plate: what are the benefits of this approach?
Slow farming, slow food, and forkin’ tasty products! By slowing down the process you can create food with true flavour, which is kinder to the earth and healthier for us all.

3. You live in a veritable food bowl - what are some other fave products around FIF?
We are lucky to be situated in the heart of the Pipers Brook Wine Region, world class wine at our doorstep, plus so much fresh local produce and artisan makers to fill our food bowl. Think cultured butter, crispy sourdough, charcuterie with a glass of pinot noir or sparkling wine.

4. What do you think makes Launceston so unique and where can you see the place headed?
We have a really strong local food culture. From our farmers and producers to chefs and event organisers, there is a real focus on showcasing our local, seasonal produce. Our community and visitors are increasing interested in food provenance. Food with a story and authentic food experiences is definitely the future.

5. What are your top 5 must-see/do experiences for visitors to Launnie?
We are a little biased, but why not take a drive out of the City. Soar through the treetops at Hollybank Wilderness Adventures, stroll through the historical gardens of the Lalla Flower Farm, discover nature at the Lilydale Falls, sip some premium cool climate wines along the Tamar Valley Wine Route and enjoy outstanding fresh and artisan produce from farm stalls (and, Fork it Farm of course!).
